Cats are very delicate animals by nature and when we have a cat and they become ill for whatever reason, we take them to the veterinarian. Most of the times we do so to hear that our feline has a disease that can be cured. Besides the diseases below, there are many viruses that have no name that a cat can catch that are fatal. Usually these viruses leave your cat weak and feverish, with a loss of appetite. The only thing to do at this point is to put your cat on medication for pain and that is life prolonging for as long as needed. Keep the cat quiet and stress free.
Here are some of the most dangerous:
Feline Leukemia- A Most common disease in cats; all domestic felines are susceptible.
Diabetes- No longer just a disease for humans, cats can contract diabetes, also.
Heart Disease- Another human disease contracted also by felines.
Cerebella Ataxia- A disease that affects the brain of a kitten while still in the mother's womb. This disease is uncurable.
Encephalitis- Although can be cured, this disease will almost always leave the cat brain-damaged.
Meningitis- Infection caused by a virus that attacks the covering of the spinal cord or the brain.
Tetanus- Although rare, cats can contract tetanus, leaving their body paralyzed.
Emphysema- A condition that once contracted is uncurable. This attacks the breathing of the cat and is caused by pneumonia and other respiratory diseases.
Once your cat contracts any of these diseases, it is time to decide of you want your cat to live with the possibilty of having other side effects such as liver and kidney damage, and heart damage. These side effects can leave your cat disabled more so than the diseases they originally contracted.
Proper vaccinations from your veterinarian at an early age can prevent most of these diseases. It is up to us as owners to see that they receive all their immunizations. Failure to do so can have grave results.
